Immaculate Heart of Mary Courtyard
The Immaculate Heart of Mary statue was a gift of the family of Sister Dolorosa Essling. It was originally placed at the Villa Maria, a convalescent home for elderly residents in Kokomo that was run by the Sisters of St. Joseph from March 1948 until 1960. When the Villa Maria closed, the statue was placed in its present location in the center courtyard.
Jesus with the Children Statue
And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them. (MK 10: 13-16).
Located on the grounds of the St. John of the Cross cabin, this statue reminds us of the educational history at St. Joseph Academy and the opportunities for learning still here for young people.
Our Lady of Fatima Shrine
During the Marian year of 1954, an Our Lady of Fatima Shrine featuring the Blessed Mother, Lucy, Jacinta, Francisco and some sheep, were placed in a four-acre field behind the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto. The Carrara marble statues from Italy were moved to the circle at the end of Academy Drive in 1978.
Sacred Heart Shrine
Dedicated September 12, 1941, the Sacred Heart Shrine stood outside St Katharine Hall in a rock garden that featured a fish pond. The four-foot-tall statue was donated by Fr. Leo Faurote and the class of 1941. In 1984 it was moved to a wall left standing after Academy was razed. This area is now the St. Joseph Academy Alumnae Garden. It currently resides behind the Trent Tebbe Eagle Scout Project Gazebo, north of the Alumnae Garden.
