Troop 132 Scout Isaiah Gaskill reached out to us at the retreat center last April to inquire about potential projects for his Eagle Scout Project. After considering a few options, he elected to build indoor benches.
“I chose this project because I knew that building benches would be beneficial for the Retreat Center and would be in my skill set to complete,” Isaiah shared.
The five benches are patterned after two benches we acquired a few years ago from a church in Peru that closed. Those benches sit at the Mary statue on the main floor. The five new benches, that feature a cross on both sides, were placed around statues on the third floor.
“Our guests often pull a chair from their rooms to sit by the statues and pray,” said Fr. David Huemmer, chaplain at St. Joseph’s. “So, we knew benches would be a useful addition to the shrines.
Sixteen-year-old Isaiah attends Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and is a junior in high school. His younger brother and sister, both pictured with the benches, are also Scouts pursuing the Eagle rank.
